DREW
1) Often speaks in a stream of consciousness—but only in an accent.
2) Collects vintage anything and shoes. The man probably has more shoes than you.
3) Drew is a dreamer.

ELISE
1) Prefers big forks & little spoons. I did not even know you could have a preference.
2) Enjoys long conversations with self while sleeping.
3) Documentaries make Elise want to "Save The Dolphins."

THEIR STORY
The first time Elise and I saw each other, she was working at a cafe. I came in with a crowd of people after John Vanderslice insisted that we all meet him for gelato after one of his shows. When I walked in through the door of the cafe, all I could see was Elise, across the room, standing on a chair. Whatever happened beyond that night, to me now is a blur. She's all I can remember.

We later met each other, and coincidentally kept meeting. Soon enough, we were never not meeting each other. After so many times, we quickly became best friends and couldn't stand being without one another. Those that say true love isn't real—they are wrong.

NIKAELA
1) Likes grey days best.
2) Is excited to be old.
3) Wants to own a goat of her own.

THOMAS
1) Happiness = the Saturday Globe and Mail.
2) Two things that make him feel like a kid: ice skating rinks and the ocean.
3) Writes his secrets down in Korean letters.

THEIR STORY (by Thom)
For us, approving of each other's book shelves was a big step. We shared: I lent her The English Patient and If On a Winter's Night a Traveller, she gave me The Satanic Verses and Of Love and Other Demons. Maybe it was, in part, through each other's favourite books that we fell in love. I loved the way Nikaela read her books. She reads physically—creasing the spines, folding corners, underlining. In between the pages are ticket stubs and leaves and the odd smear of strawberry jam.

Nikaela keeps my head in the clouds; I keep her feet on the ground (although we're not as tall as that makes us sound). We like cooking and dreaming and reading and eating breakfast in the sun. In short, we're a match.

DAN
1. His degree is in ceramics and metalsmithing. (I wish he had time to make me more ceramics!)
2. He broke both of his arms when I was pregnant.
3. Has a real weakness for Thai peanut curry noodles.

EMILY
1. She makes the most amazing croissants.
2. Gets very excited to point out when clouds sit on the horizon and can be mistaken for mountains.
3. She's a great writer—even birthday cards and notes are the best.

THEIR STORY
Dan owned an adorable coffee shop here in Kalamazoo, the Rocketstar Cafe. I was in my last year of college and would pass by on my way to and from class. After a few visits, my roommate and I both had crushes on him, and we found that we were heading into the shop more (and more!) frequently. Months of visiting him at the Rocketstar with nothing more than bashful, flirty small talk passed. Dan insists this was because one of his employees was interested in me. Seeking an end to conversations of "Should I just ask him to dinner or something?" my roommate finally took the initiative for me. She threw me a small surprise birthday party and had invited him! He couldn't come, so he gave his phone number to her to give to me. She made a big to-do about the birthday card she was giving me, and made everyone watch me open it. Since we'd been jokingly competing for him, the inside fo the card read, "Happy Birthday—you owe me big!" and it had a post-it note that he'd written his number on. I literally almost threw up, couldn't stop giggling, and I turned every shade of red. I was so embarrassed, I resolved to never call or go back to his coffee shop, and ended up stopping by the coffee shop that night. In November we'll have been together for eight years and married five.

The lesson here: Stalking people pays off. Just kidding, don't stalk people! The real lesson is be quietly persistent. Nope. I don't know what the lesson is.
